Flinders Ranges National Park South Australia
It is day 2 of our overland trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. So much to explore and not enough time as it is the case all the time.
Day 1 was super awesome. We drove the 4x4 track on Rawnsley Park Station property. It was quite a 4x4 challenge getting to the top but once at the top the views were simply out of this world.
Once we had got a taste of how vast the Flinders Ranges are and the breathtaking vistas stretching as far as the eye can see, we wanted to use day 2 to explore these.
On the second day we decided to drive into the Flinders Ranges national park. A drive that provided not only scenery that had us spell bound, but also it was a drive through the passages of time to an age spanning over 600 million years.
At a glance this semi-arid country may appear boring, but once you make the effort to drive through and take in the sights that perception changes very quickly. Ever so often the landscape changes. At one minute it can be rocks as far as the horizon and then a few hundred meters later it is lush vegetation. Vegetation that has adopted to the climatic conditions. Pine trees and River Red Gum trees makes up the bulk of the area. In the meantime surrounding all this, standing tall , larger than life, are the mountain ranges. Ever changing their appearance as the moving Sun casts varying angles of shadows and light as they have done for millions of years.
The icing on the cake for us overlanders is having the bragging rights to say that we drove through this magnificently proud ancient land rather than just seeing it on a screen or reading about it in a magazine.
Most of the roads were gravel. Not so much of a challenge from a 4x4 driving perspective. Corrugations were a nuisance at some places. But lowering tyre pressures took care of this.
South Australia is truly an amazing state just as much as this country Australia, we call home is. Whilst there is lots to see in the world, we have some of the best places to visit and see right here in our back yard. All you have to do is get in your 4x4 and overland :)
Cheers!
